NEDC CLASS DRESS REQUIREMENTS
Why a dress code for dance class?
Dancers wear special clothing designed for dancing. Dancewear is designed so that the body can
move with ease. It is also designed so that the body can be seen! This is the most important
reason why we require dancewear to be worn in class. Every dance technique class works on
what is called “proper alignment of the body”. Proper alignment (posture) not only makes the
dancer look better, but it is crucial in preventing injury! In order to give you and/or your child
the best possible instruction we need to be able to see your full body, i.e., ankles, knees, hips,
torso, shoulders, neck. (Don’t panic! We do consider your particular area of sensitivity!) There
are different styles of dancewear and footwear required for different styles of dance. This has to
do with both the physical needs of each particular dance style, and with the historical and
cultural traditions from which each style developed. Thus, dressing properly for class becomes
an important part of the dance student’s education. All dancewear required for NEDC classes
are available for purchase at our studio or at any area dancewear store. Thank you for your
cooperation!
